BUFORD, Ga. — A park ranger has undergone surgery after being shot Wednesday at Lake Lanier by a woman who apparently committed suicide, officials said.

The ranger told police he approached a woman in a pickup about 10 p.m. Wednesday to tell her the park was closed. But the woman opened fire, wounding the ranger below the chest. Police who searched the area found a woman dead inside the truck a short time later.

The ranger walked to a road and summoned help.

“He was approaching this vehicle with the intention of just saying, ‘Hey, the park is closed, and you need to go,’ ” Gwinnett Police Cpl. Jake Smith said. “And there was no kind of confrontation or argument or anything like that between the two of them. She simply produced the gun and shot him one time.”

Smith said investigators believe the suspect committed suicide. The ranger was taken to a hospital for surgery. His condition was not immediately available.

The names of the ranger and the woman have not been released.

Rangers at the park are not armed and do not wear bulletproof vests, Smith said.

What a shame

This is in my neck of the woods....maybe they need to have weapons.....I hope they rethink that decision......we live in a different world today.

Dam!

Another plus for the anti-gun Liberals. The True Americans can't win on nothing today in this almost Socialist Communistic once great nation.

So what..

Unpublished

What is to say the shooter was not a "True American"? Some people should only speak of what they know because you cannot have a socialist and communist nation at the same time...Two totally different ideologies.

CG, an innocent park ranger

CG, an innocent park ranger was shot and nearly killed, and in your head you think it's about politics. I am very shocked and surprised at you, not to mention disgusted.

That man was nearly murdered. And you want to spew stuff about True Americans, and liberals, and guns.

Sad, just downright sad.
