ATHENS, Ga. — The Bulldogs will again be dealing with a shorthanded defense in the season opener against Clemson.

Georgia starting safety Josh Harvey-Clemons, a rising sophomore, will miss the Bulldogs’ 2013 debut at Clemson for a violation of team rules, a Georgia spokesman confirmed Tuesday.

UGA Police were called to the dorm shared by Harvey-Clemons and tight end Ty Flournoy-Smith on May 14 to investigate the smell of marijuana. Both athletes told police they had smoked marijuana and a digital scale was found in the dorm, according to a UGA Police incident report. However, no marijuana was found, no arrests were made and no charges were filed.

Georgia’s athletic department policy calls for a suspension for 10 percent of an athlete’s season for a first-time substance abuse violation. In the case of a football player, that amounts to one game.

Harvey-Clemons (6-foot-5, 212 pounds) played in four games last season and had 14 tackles. He had three tackles against Florida Atlantic and two against Missouri and Georgia Southern.

Georgia coach Mark Richt confirmed last week that Flournoy-Smith would transfer. When reached by The Athens Banner-Herald last Wednesday night, Flournoy-Smith did not offer a reason for his decision. The incident has been forwarded to UGA’s Office of Student Conduct.

Well, that actually took

Well, that actually took alittle longer than I had expected for some Georgia player to get in trouble. My apologies to the Carolina team and fans for disappointing them that it was just a 1 game suspension. But remember...there's still a looooong summer ahead of us! A lot can...and probably will...happen between now and the start of football season!

Geesh.

Hey Just My Opinion!

What REALLY sucks for UGA is that they actually have a zero tolerance policy on first offenses UNLIKE the 5 strikes and you are out Steve Garcia policy at South Carolina. In fact, UGA is the only school in the SEC with the exception of Vanderbilt with such a harsh policy. I think UGA is being hard headed in the way they handle first offenses, because Lord knows that the media never even mentions the fact that at LSU, Alabama, Auburn, and especially over in Columbia, this suspended UGA player is running stadium steps and most certain to not miss a second of playing time on a first offense. A first offense in Columbia SC does NOT require a player to be suspended and this is a fact. Do you really believe that any starting Alabama Crimson Tide player is going to miss playing time on a first offense? Let me take this one step further. Does anyone actually believe that a campus cop in Tuscaloosa would actually even turn in a Alabama player and still have a job!

I feel your pain. But, UGA can't reverse it's policy. That, in my opinion, would be weak. I do believe that the rest of the SEC (all NCAA schools in fact) should have the same policy.
