CATAWBA, S.C. — York County officials say one person has died and another has been injured in an accident at a paper plant.

The accident happened around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Resolute Forest Products plant in Catawba.

County emergency management director Cotton Howell says two employees climbed into an old tank outside the main production area to do some maintenance work. Howell says it’s possible that some type of chemical leaked into the tank.

One of the workers was removed from the tank and is being treated for injuries. The other person died at the scene. The names of the victims have not been released.

Howell says no evacuation was necessary.

The plant employs about 700 people and makes commercial printing papers and market pulp.

Blanks in all of the incoming lines....

purged with water first, then with positive ventilated air for 24 hours. Explosimeter and air oxygen levels checked before entry. "Tank Entry Permits" require all of these procedures and signatures. They know what happened. But the spin will be on. Plausible Deniability.

Chlorine is used in great quantities around paper mills for bleaching purposes. This or a host of other chemicals could have been the culprit. Wish the article has said what the tank they were working on was designed to hold. Just speculation.

Confined Space

Confined Space Entry. These words should be understood by every one who works in any place that has any kind of vessels. Someone violated OSHA rules and this man died. I only hope the right person goes to jail for this.
