The last of five escapees from Augusta Youth Development Campus has been captured, authorities said.

Wayne Johnson, 18, was found near Barton Chapel and Milledgeville roads just after 2 p.m. by a Richmond County deputy working off a tip from an off-duty Department of Juvenile Justice staff member, according to a statement from the DJJ.

Johnson was booked into the Richmond County jail on charges of escape and theft by receiving, the statement said.

Johnson and four other YDC inmates escaped Friday night and stole a car off Tobacco Road. Three were captured after a chase with deputies, and another after a foot search.

"As a continuing security precaution, the Augusta detention facility remains on lockdown today while investigators verify how the escape occurred," the DJJ statement said. "Investigators from the DJJ Office of Investigations in Atlanta are on-site at Augusta YDC conducting a facility safety review, examining the campus for security deficiencies, and looking for any policy violations which may have contributed to the escape."

Now that the last escaped inmate...

I'm glad he's been caught, had me worried when his stolen car was found near a friend of mine's house, and where he was picked up was way too close to residences of family members and I. Now that the last escaped YDC inmate has been rounded up, what is the status on a young burglary suspect, Valdez Patrick Lamart Wilfork? (A recent address of his listed in "For the Record" is not far from there, 2300 block of Golden Camp Road). He was supposed to turn himself in a couple of weeks ago. Cough, cough. Any luck finding him?

Never would have

thought to look for him in the Barton Chapel area. ;-)

Interested in hearing how they escaped, since as of this morning 36 hours later, the last word was "...still trying to determine how...."

Spare me the sarcasm OpenCurtain UNLESS you live in 30906. I do, and I've lived here most of my life. I don't appreciate the fact that it has gone down from a decent, upward mobile place to live into a decline with criminal activity EVERY DAY! Taxpayers don't deserve this!
