TRIPOLI, Libya — The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three American members of his staff were killed in the attack on the U.S. consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi by protesters angry over a film that ridiculed Islam’s Prophet Muhammad, Libyan officials said Wednesday.

They said Ambassador Chris Stevens was killed Tuesday night when he and a group of embassy employees went to the consulate to try to evacuate staff as the building came under attack by a mob guns and rocket propelled grenades.

The three Libyan officials who confirmed the deaths were deputy interior minister for eastern Libya Wanis al-Sharaf; Benghazi security chief Abdel-Basit Haroun; and Benghazi city council and security official Ahmed Bousinia.

The State Department said Tuesday that one American was killed in the attack. It has not confirmed the other deaths.

The attack on the Benghazi consulate took place as hundreds of protesters in neighboring Egypt scaled the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and tore down and replaced the American flag with a black Islamic banner.

The attacks in Benghazi and Cairo were the first such assaults on U.S. diplomatic facilities in either country, at a time when both Libya and Egypt are struggling to overcome the turmoil following the ouster of their longtime authoritarian leaders, Moammar Gadhafi and Hosni Mubarak, in uprisings last year.

The protests in both countries were sparked by outrage over a film ridiculing Muhammad produced by an Israeli filmmaker living in California and being promoted by an extreme anti-Muslim Egyptian Christian campaigner in the United States. Excerpts from the film dubbed into Arabic were posted on YouTube.

Stevens, 52, was a career diplomat who spoke Arabic and French and had already served two tours in Libya, including running the office in Benghazi during the revolt against Gadhafi. He was confirmed as ambassador to Libya by the Senate earlier this year.

Before Tuesday, five U.S. ambassadors had been killed in the line of duty, the last being Adolph Dubs in Afghanistan in 1979, according to the State Department historian’s office.

Two other U.S. ambassadors have died in plane crashes:

Another great Foriegn Policy decesion by Hillary and Obama

gone wrong.

Remember to credit our president and US State Dept. that worked so hard to support these very same extremists now in power. Just Google or AC search "Obama and Arab Spring", to see pro Arab Spring comments and efforts to support these fanatics.

BTW: Arnold L. Raphel, in Pakistan, 1988 - some comments by people "read on", were that the plane was shot down. But the US needed to maintain Pakistan as an friendly nation due the CCCP/USSR problem in the area at the time.

It wasn't the movie. That's just what the Obamamedia want you to think. Remember, we assassinated their chief potentate. You cannot blame them for retaliating.

Almost every news outlet is

Almost every news outlet is reporting that the attacks are in response to Terry Jones (Promotional role only) and his Muhammad videos.

It seems more likely that the attack was in retalliation for the killing of Abu Yahya al-Libi (a Libyan al-Qaeda leader) by a drone strike in June. If al-Qaeda was responsible, I would imagine that Al-Libi's death played an important role in their response. They would have planned this attack for September 11th weeks, if not months ago.

It's important to note the distinction between this attack and the one in Cairo which was not carried out by a militant group and which did appear to be in response to the stupid film.

There is blood...

There is blood on Terry Jones' hands. His assocition with this latest insult has without a doubt led to the deaths of four Americans. Preacher Jones is a menace to social order and should be held accountable in civil court along with the radical filmmaker that produced that piece of incendiary trash. They knew full well what the reaction would be. The current administration policies had absolutely nothing to do with these killings. And to say otherwise shows an utter lack of understanding of foreign policy and the dedication of Muslims. To blame our President and Secretary of State for this horrible incident is ridiculous. When will we ever learn that the Muslim faith will vigorously defend the sanctity of the image of there prophet Mohammed?

I've never once complained

I've never once complained about the thumbs down- but I find it sad someone would dislike the video of the Ambassador who was recently killed. It's a short video, humanizing the man who was murdered that most American's didn't even know who he was until he died.

Unless a poster supports the killing of him, in that case, it would make sense....

Sorry but I am going to disagree on your TSD theory.

Look at the facts, This IT has never posted one comment from the very beginning. Here is my reasoning.
Every day an average of 300 and sometime more are made on all threads. There is almost always a downer given for each one. Some receive 2 or more by posters on here when they disagree with the post that they have made. I can almost guarantee you that one of them is from the TSD IT. Now lets put a little math together. If IT was trying to build points, IT would have somewheres in the area of 60 to 70,000 point at this time. If IT was posting, IT's identity would be very evident.

This TSD IT has a mental problem and is very sick. Just remember, every time he gives a downer on you, your points goes up. I say 40% of my points have been from IT.

You can post the Lords Prayer and you will get a downer....
You can post that the King SMNCICBHO is the best human to have walked on the face of the earth since Christ and you would receive a downer.

The worst part about this IT, is Sean knows who it is.

I quit playing when I realized a few things. 1. Points are awarded for thumbs up and down by posters. 2. Participation only rewards the Chronicle. 3. A single person fueled by oxycondin and bourbon has more time to troll for points.

The U.S. and NATO "fixed"

The U.S. and NATO "fixed" Libya just like they "fixed" Iraq and Afghanistan, eh? What happened yesterday in Libya is likely a preview of what to expect in Syria when and if Assad falls like Gaddafi did. The U.S. war on terror is creating a growing backlash against the United States. The militarized U.S. foreign policy has been counterproductive under both Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Staying the course is a prescription for more American heartbreak. BTW 13 civilians were killed in a U.S drone strike in Yemen a few days ago. Americans did not wince when that happened. But when 4 Americans get whacked in Libya the U.S. media is suddenly preoccupied with the injustice. War is NOT the answer. It is likely that the growing number of wars the U.S. is waging will merge into a giant conflagration than even a superpower like United States cannot control. More drone strikes on terror suspects in the name of bringing those responsible to "justice" is not the solution. Peace is the way forward. Nobody wins in WWIII.

This Is Scary!

A thought come into my mind right after making my 05:08 post about Retired Army and I was going to post on R&R asking if anybody knew
what happen to him.
Came back to see the reaction to my post....and there you is. Welcome Back.

My question is, was your 3 point sort of pointing a finger at me.

Yes, I'm and individual, Yes on Oxycontin but that word Bourbon said it wasn't me...."Reserve" would have been a dead ringer.

Now if starting around 9 am this morning, cutting up a 3 foot Oak tree that fell on my property, loaded it and dumped it behind the Dam and not stopping once, even for lunch, until about 30 minutes before my 05:08 pm post is considered "Trolling For Points" - Then you are dead wrong.

I do take time to read 90% of ever AC post made on all thread each day. I do grade most of them when I feel they were worthy. As far as given downers, I say I have not given more than 300 since the very beginning, only the hard core, no common sense Liberals. Guess what, I have even given them uppers too when I felt it was an intelligent post.
