HARTSVILLE, S.C. — Hartsville police are trying to find out who has taken some manhole covers.

Police Chief James Hudson says the department has received reports of seven covers stolen in the past week.

Darlington police report three manhole covers have been stolen. Several also have been taken in Lamar

.Hudson says investigators have contacted local shred mills to see if the covers have been sold there for scrap.

Officials warn an open manhole could be dangerous for drivers and pedestrians.

Officials say it costs about $400 to replace each manhole cover.
