The Georgia Bulldogs  finally filled the role of “Uga IX." And it’s a familiar face.

Russ, the half-brother of Uga VII, served two terms as interim mascot for the Georgia. He has received a “battlefield promotion” and will assume the new title, according to an announcement today by Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity.

The official ceremony for Uga IX will be held prior to the Georgia-Florida Atlantic game, Sept. 15, at Sanford Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and will be carried live on CSS.

“Russ has endeared himself to the Georgia people over the last three years,” McGarity said. “His dedication to duty when called upon has been exemplary and it’s fitting that he takes his place in the official line of Georgia mascots.”

Russ has served on an interim basis for 23 games, starting following the unexpected death of Uga VII on Nov. 19, 2009. Under Russ, the Bulldogs have posted a 14-9 record, including an appearance in the 2011 Southeastern Conference championship game.
