COLUMBUS, Ga. -- The U.S. Army’s Criminal Investigation Division at Fort Benning is investigating the death of a decomposed body that washed ashore Saturday afternoon at Uchee Creek on the Chattahoochee River.

While CID agents say they are still working to identify the body, Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer that Fort Benning authorities had a possible name.

“The body was found on Fort Benning property after it apparently washed ashore from the Chattahoochee River,” CID agent Chris Grey said in a statement.

So far, CID agents believe the man is a civilian with no Department of Defense affiliation and there is no indication that he was a soldier. Special agents are working closely with federal, state and local authorities to verify the identity of the man.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Authorities in Columbus and Russell County were asked to check outstanding cases for missing persons.
