Hundreds complain of new school name

Students listen to speakers at ASU this afternoon

About 300 at Augusta State University took part in a protest against the Georgia Regents name for the consolidated school.

Today’s noon protest at Augusta State University’s Doug Barnard Ampitheatre also fell on the the first day of the fall semester.

Joe Bowles, Augusta's mayor pro tem, asked the crowd, "What the hell is a GRU?' in reference to the name approved by the Board of Regents.

The Facebook group “Everyone Against ‘Georgia Regents University’ Sound Off” started by an Augusta State University alumnus, helped organize the protest.

Less than two weeks after the announcement of the new name on Aug. 7 and the subsequent formation of the Facebook group, the group has had more than 4,000 likes from people supporting the opposition to the new name.
