ATHENS, Ga. -- Authorities said Sunday they think an Athens man whose body was found Saturday morning in Oglethorpe County was murdered.

Derrick Andrew Johnson, of a Highland Park Drive address, was last seen alive on Friday night, according to Jim Fullington, special agent in charge of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Athens field office.

Johnson was found dead Saturday in a field off Howington Road, a dirt road just outside Winterville in Oglethorpe County, Fullington said.

Evidence at the scene prompted investigators to suspect foul play, he said.

The body has been transported to the GBI lab in Atlanta for an autopsy today.

Authorities would not say what led them to the field where Johnson’s body was discovered or whether they had a suspect in the case.
