BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. — Golf season is almost over. It’s time for football.

At least it is for the South Carolina coaching staff, head ball coach Steve Spurrier said Thursday after the annual media outing at Cobblestone Park Golf Club.

“Our golf season’s over tomorrow,” he said. “We’ve got about one more day of golf and then we’ll come straight to getting our team ready to play.”

The Gamecocks open their season Aug. 30 on the road against Vanderbilt. And, as Spurrier enters his eighth season at South Carolina, his team won’t be able to sneak up on anyone.

In 2011, the Gamecocks made history by winning 11 games and finishing in the top 10 in the final Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls, both school firsts.

“Those guys are sort of laying for us from what I hear,” Spurrier said of the Thursday night game against the Commodores.

“They’ve been watching a whole bunch of tape of us most of the summer. They’re putting a lot of marbles into that first game.”

Spurrier thought he had another first – the Gamecocks won their final four games in 2011, including a convincing win over Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl – but was told that the 1958 team also finished with four wins.

“What was the record that year?” Spurrier shot back.

The 1958 Gamecocks finished 7-3.

Even though the current team is enjoying the most successful era in school history, Spurrier reminded the media that there was still plenty to accomplish.

“That team accomplished a lot last year,” Spurrier said. “But there’s still a lot of first out there, like winning the SEC. Which we hope to do someday soon.”
