AURORA, Colo. — A gunman in a gas mask barged into a crowded Denver-area theater during a midnight showing of the new Batman movie Friday, hurled a gas canister and then opened fire, killing 12 people and injuring at least 50 others in one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent U.S. history.

Aurora Police Chief Daniel Oates talks to media at Aurora Mall where as many as 12 people were killed and many injured at a shooting at the Century 16 movie theatre in Aurora, Colo., Friday, July 20, 2012.

When the smoke began to spread, some moviegoers thought it was a stunt that was part of the “The Dark Knight Rises,” one of the most highly anticipated films of the summer. They saw a silhouette of a person in the haze near the screen, pointing a gun at the crowd and then shooting.

“There were bullet (casings) just falling on my head. They were burning my forehead,” Jennifer Seeger said, adding that the gunman, dressed like a SWAT team member, fired steadily, stopping only to reload.

“Every few seconds it was just: Boom, boom, boom,” she said. “He would reload and shoot and anyone who would try to leave would just get killed.”

The suspect was taken into custody near a car behind the theater and was identified by federal law enforcement officials as 24-year-old James Holmes.

Holmes was studying neuroscience in a Ph.D. program at the University of Colorado-Denver, university spokeswoman Jacque Montgomery said. Holmes enrolled a year ago and was in the process of withdrawing at the time of the shootings, Montgomery said.

Authorities gave no motive for the attack. The FBI said there was no indication of ties to any terrorist groups.

Police said 71 people were shot. Another 59 adults and children were wounded. Aurora police Chief Dan Oates said the suspect wore a gas mask, a ballistic helmet and vest as well as leg, groin and throat protectors. He said he had an AR-15 military-style, semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun and two pistols.

FBI agents and police used a hook and ladder fire truck to reach Holmes’ apartment in Aurora, Oates said. They put a camera at the end of a 12-foot pole inside the apartment and discovered the unit was booby-trapped. Authorities evacuated five buildings as they tried to figure how to disarm the flammable and explosive material.

“It’s something I’ve never seen before,” Oates said.

At least 24 people were being treated at Denver-area hospitals, some of them for chemical exposure apparently related to canisters thrown by the gunman. Some of those hurt were children, including a 4-month-old baby, who was treated a hospital and released.

Police released a statement from Holmes’ family: “Our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved.”

The movie opened across the world Friday with midnight showings in the U.S. The shooting prompted officials to cancel the red-carpet premiere in Paris, with workers pulling down the display at a theater on the Champs-Elysees. Around the U.S., police and some movie theaters stepped up security for daytime showings of the movie, though many fans waiting in line said they were not worried about their safety.

President Barack Obama said he was saddened by the “horrific and tragic shooting,” pledging that his administration was “committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded.”

It was the worst mass shooting in the U.S. since the Nov. 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood, Texas. An Army psychiatrist was charged with killing 13 soldiers and civilians and wounding more than two dozen others.

In Colorado, it was the deadliest since the Columbine High School massacre on April 20, 1999, when two students opened fire in the Denver suburb of Littleton, killing 12 classmates and a teacher and wounding 26 others before killing themselves. Columbine High is about 12 miles from the theater.

Friday’s attack began shortly after midnight at the multiplex theater.

The film has several scenes of public mayhem — a hallmark of superhero movies. In one scene, the main villain Bane leads an attack on the stock exchange and, in another, leads a shooting and bombing rampage on a packed football stadium.

The gunman released a gas that smelled like pepper spray from a green canister, Seeger said. “I thought it was showmanship. I didn’t think it was real,” she said.

Seeger said she was in the second row, about four feet from the gunman, when he pointed a gun at her face. At first, “I was just a deer in headlights. I didn’t know what to do,” she said. Then she ducked to the ground as the gunman shot people seated behind her.

She said she began crawling toward an exit when she saw a girl of about 14 “lying lifeless on the stairs.” She saw a man with a bullet wound in his back and tried to check his pulse, but “I had to go. I was going to get shot.”

Witness Shayla Roeder said she saw a teenage girl on the ground bleeding outside the theater. “She just had this horrible look in her eyes. .... We made eye contact and I could tell she was not all right,” Roeder said.

Police, ambulances and emergency crews swarmed on the scene after frantic calls started flooding the 911 switchboard. Officers came running in and telling people to leave the theater, Salina Jordan told the Denver Post. She said some police were carrying and dragging bodies.

Hayden Miller told KUSA-TV that he heard several shots. “Like little explosions going on and shortly after that we heard people screaming,” he told the station. Hayden said at first he thought it was part of a louder movie next door. But then he saw “people hunched over leaving theater.”

You're assuming this man wanted *fame*, wanted on tv. Perhaps he is just one sick and pathetic person.

Another sad day.

Do you all remember the mass shooting in Killeen, TX at the Luby's in 1991 where 23 people were killed? One of the woman in there, Dr. Suzanna Hupp whose father and mother was killed had a gun in her car that she normally had in her purse at that time Texas had no concealed law. She could have taken this man down before he killed all those people and if I am not mistaken she was responsible for getting the concealed weapons law in Texas passed. Law abiding citizens can't protect themselves yet criminals and sick individuals can make target practice out of us. I pray for all of these victims and their families.

Terrorist?

USA: The only country where guns are easier to get than mental health care.

When its easier to get a FIRE ARM than it is TO VOTE IN 2012-WE HAVE A PROBLEM!

When will they stop? What is going on in the world? Where have our morals and values gone? What has called this? What is the race of the suspect? Is he apart of the entitlement crowd?

Is he labeled as a terrorist? Or does he not fit the media's profile of a terrorist?

No Bullets = No Deaths

“You don’t need no gun control, you know what you need? We need some bullet control. Men, we need to control the bullets, that’s right. I think all bullets should cost five thousand dollars… five thousand dollars per bullet… You know why? Cause if a bullet cost five thousand dollars there would be no more innocent bystanders."
Chris Rock

Maybe it's time to give this some consideration.

Have you heard of reloading? I am sure you have. So, how do you control those that do their own reloading? There are a lot of people that make their own bullets, as you call them.

Some media too quick to place blame on the wrong people?

Everyone with a heart is saying prayers or having thoughts for the victims.

But how shallow has some of the liberal media outlets become?
Several of the left of center leaning media outlets immediately saw a political opportunity and tried use this to garner anti-conservative votes. The made up news story was spread far an wide to likely 12 million listeners, in a clear effort to paint certain conservative citizens as nut jobs. But in this case, ABC screwed up yet again, which has frequently become the normal for Network TV News groups. They got it knowing wrong. TV media rushing to be the 1st to get a sound bite out is 1 thing. Deliberately using such a horrendous event for political gain is lower than whale droppings and that stuffs s on the bottom of the ocean another.

Let us all focus and remember this was a NUT case imitating a movie scene. We don't ban things for 270,000,000 others in this country (yet) because of 1 persons actions. If that's the case let us hope no future movie has a scene with a driver in car plowing down people in the street. Or, we will all be riding mass transit.

He's a mass murderer whose motive was to murder as many innocent people as he could because of perceived wrongs in his life. He is a dangerous evil man. You can call it insanity, you can call it mental illness, but nobody does this on a whim. He's been planning this for a long, long time, and no sane, healthy, well-adjusted person can ever understand how people like that think.

I posted earlier:

I was going to post a flippant remark about how this was another case of an evil firearm that got up on its own and killed so many, but the magnitude of the killing just cries out for reason.

Would just one man with his own weapon shooting in self-defense have stopped this? I can't say, and we will never know. As long as there are crazies and the government creates gun-free (for the victims) zones for these predators and they find fame by doing this, this will continue.

In the past I have asked that the perpetrator's names be withheld from the public, sealed away forever. Today, the whole world seems to believe that 'there's no such thing as bad publicity.' He will inevitably develop a following, and over the decades --like Manson-- generate interviews, books, perhaps a wife while the state grinds on with his endless appeals. This is this miserable coward's single claim to an identity; he should be forever anonymous.

"Reaction"

Liberals are making mince meat of the Second Amendment over this isolated action of a deranged nonhuman being. 99% of the mainstream news media almost make hero's out of these non humans. Victims become only numbers. 12 dead, 50 wounded.

I say, never go anyplace in our society today unless you are armed but there is a flaw to my statement. If there was armed law abiding citizen at that theater and when bullets started flying, most armed one in most cases would panic like the rest and some may even forget they are armed.
The ones that could have taken action would be those armed citizens who have had the experience of being shot at and remain calm enough to complete a firing mission.
I have never been off my property with out a 15 round automatic attached to my body. I can assure you that if I was there, and the first or second round didn't make contact in my head, there would have been a lot less then 12 dead and 50 wounded.
I can make a bet that our King SMNCICBHO and Liberal non-Americans
are behind closed doors right now and doing everything to enforce an anti-gun movement.
If you think I am overreacting, just wait an see the outcome of the mindset that guns kill, not the nonhumans.

Illegal

Funny, people protest illegal immigration, illegal taxes based on the health care laws, illegal citizenship of the President, but when a gentlemen like this (and I use that term VERY LOOSELY) can get SIX guns illegally, there is no outcry against guns. Matter of fact you hear that there should be MORE guns in the hands of everyone.

As a previous poster stated, people are weary of the saggy pants and deadlock types as troublemakers (and yes, they do do their fair share of mayhem), yet, it seems like the mass killings come from the suburban, "you'd never expect him to do that" type. Maybe, just maybe, we need to start looking at our society as a united front of trouble, instead of certain sectors that can be easily blamed for "causing trouble".

American Terrorist

It was reported that the murderer had an arsenal of weapons, including an AR15. If you don't know what an AR15 is, it is the civilian version of an M16, the semi-automatic carried by US troops.

Here's what that weapon can do:
http://youtu.be/rQUkSIK1UsA

It is mind-boggling to me that a demented person such as James Holmes, can literally go out and buy a semi-automatic weapon, such as an AR15, no questions asked. Why, in the name of all that is holy, does the US allow civilians to buy such a weapon? Holmes would have faced stricter laws as a civilian trying to vote, than trying to buy a gun.

This is just wrong.

Well, CG

... the Founders knew from experience that governments can easily become tyrannies, so they made provision (Second Amendment) that the citizens could take on the government on an equal basis.

Smart folks; same guys who thought it a good idea the armed forces swear allegiance to protect and defend the Constitution, rather than the (shudder) President. I do not see the military going along with the kind of third-world power play many suspect the Obamessiah of planning.
