Quidditch, made popular by 'Harry Potter' series, coming to Augusta

Quidditch players participated in an exhibition in New York's Central Park in May 2010. The event was held by the International Quidditch Association, which will be holding its 2013 Southern Regional Championship in Augusta.

Augusta will serve as host to the International Quidditch Association’s 2013 Southern Regional Championship, according to an Augusta Sports Council release.

The sport, inspired by the game in the Harry Potter book series, will bring in more than 20 college and club teams for the two-day event, the release said. The event’s date, time and location will be announced later.

“The Augusta Sports Council is thrilled to support our community by bringing new, different and exciting sporting events, like Quidditch, to Augusta,” Augusta Sports Council CEO Brinsley Thigpen said in the release. “We are confident that the first Southern Regional Championship will be a fun and athletic adventure for participants and spectators alike.”
