COLUMBIA — A Richland County sheriff’s deputy has shot and killed a suspect after fighting with the man he was trying to arrest.

Sheriff Leon Lott said the shooting happened early Thursday after an officer went to a motel and thought he saw a domestic dispute.

Lott says the officer confronted the man, who ran away. The officer caught the man and they struggled. Lott says the suspect took the officer’s Taser twice. The sheriff says the deputy fired his gun after his Taser was taken a second time.

The man died at a nearby hospital. His name has not been released.

Lott says the deputy suffered knee and arm injuries.

Lott says officers found cocaine at the suspect’s motel room.
