Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor said when deputies arrived they found the victim, Arthur Scruggs, 63, inside of the home suffering from multiple blunt force injuries to his head. He was taken to the emergency room at Effingham Health System where he was pronounced dead.
“The investigation revealed that Lovett struck Scruggs with a shovel multiple times in the head following an argument,” Ehsanipoor said.
Ehsanipoor said investigators aren’t sure what spurred the deadly argument.
“We don’t know, but an elderly female resident of the home died earlier in the day,” Ehsanipoor said. “Maybe tensions were high.”
This homicide remains under investigation by the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division.
An autopsy will be performed at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Savannah.
Lovett is being held at the Effingham County Jail.
