An Athens, Ga., company that plans to renovate and reopen one of Thurmond Lake’s oldest commercial marina sites is in the final stages of reviewing its long-term lease with the Army Corps of Engineers.
“We have the lease in hand and are reviewing with counsel,” said Mike Jansen, the owner of Classic City Marinas, which was selected in March as the new lessee of the property in Leah, Ga., formerly known as Little River Marina.
The marina, which has operated under various owners since the 1950s, closed in December when the corps decided not to renew the most recent operator’s lease. Jansen has said a complete face-lift will be needed to establish a new store, fuel facilities and – possibly at a later date – a restaurant.
Billy Birdwell, a spokesman for the Corps of Engineers’ Savannah District, said construction work cannot begin until the lease and other documents are completed, though the boat ramp remains open.
“We mailed the proposed lease to the grantee on June 1,” Birdwell said. “They have it and are reviewing it. Once they return it, we should complete the agreement in short order.”
Jansen’s company was given a separate license April 30 to allow site inspection, surveying and pre-construction review.
