Man faces Athens golf cart DUI charge

ATHENS, Ga. -- A 21-year-old man caught driving a golf cart Thursday morning was charged with DUI, driving without headlights and theft by receiving, according to an Athens-Clarke County police report.

A police officer on bike patrol saw the golf cart, which belongs to the Classic Center, the downtown Athens convention and performance venue, coming out of a driveway. The golf cart, which had no lights, made a U-turn and stopped as the officer shined a flashlight on the vehicle.

The driver, 21-year-old Sourush Samimi โ€” whose address was redacted from the report, but who told the officer he was walking to his home nearby when he saw the golf cart โ€” said the vehicle was sitting flipped over in a Ruth Drive parking lot, so he set it back on its wheels because he was worried that gasoline might leak out and cause an explosion. According to the police report, Samimi also told the officer that he was simply driving the golf cart to see if it would still run after being flipped over.
