Man faces Athens golf cart DUI charge

ATHENS, Ga. -- A 21-year-old man caught driving a golf cart Thursday morning was charged with DUI, driving without headlights and theft by receiving, according to an Athens-Clarke County police report.

A police officer on bike patrol saw the golf cart, which belongs to the Classic Center, the downtown Athens convention and performance venue, coming out of a driveway. The golf cart, which had no lights, made a U-turn and stopped as the officer shined a flashlight on the vehicle.

The driver, 21-year-old Sourush Samimi — whose address was redacted from the report, but who told the officer he was walking to his home nearby when he saw the golf cart — said the vehicle was sitting flipped over in a Ruth Drive parking lot, so he set it back on its wheels because he was worried that gasoline might leak out and cause an explosion. According to the police report, Samimi also told the officer that he was simply driving the golf cart to see if it would still run after being flipped over.

Creative story

I like a good story as much as the next person. The police were suspicious when they noticed the cart was electric and Mr Samimi's breath smelled more like gasoline.

Well, believe it or not

Well, believe it or not several years ago I had a golf cart turn up on my property. I called the CCSO and they came out. But come to find out someone up the river had been driving the thing and the charge went dead, so they left it there. I'm not saying that's the case HERE, but golf carts do get left all over.
