Augusta Regional Airport parking grows

Construction projects adding more than 600 parking spaces at Augusta Regional Airport are expected to help relieve shortages there.

A new long-term parking lot with an additional 420 spots opened Monday, roughly doubling the existing long term lot size. The airport closed its two short-term lots the same day to begin the second phase of construction.

“We’ve just grown so much. We were always going into overflow. The lots were always full,” said Diane Johnston, director of marketing for Augusta Regional. “We’ve just been desperate for parking.”

When complete, the new short-term lot will have space for more than 200 vehicles. Another lot with 200 spots has not been designated for use yet, Johnston said.

Prior to the construction project, the long-term lot had about 400 spaces, and the overflow and short-term lots had a combined 350 spaces, she said.

The second phase is expected to be complete this fall. In addition to a short-term lot, the project adds a new rental car ready and return lot, revenue gates, lighting, signs and marking.

The total cost of the expansion project is slightly more than $4 million, which operating revenues are expected to cover, Johnston said.

The long-term parking lots should accommodate vehicles during the short-term lot closure, but travelers are advised to allow adequate time for parking. Signs are posted to help direct travelers.
