NEW YORK — Aiken-trained Alpha will miss the Belmont Stakes on June 9 because of a fever.

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said Thursday the colt ran a temperature Tuesday. He has been fine the past two days, but it’s “too high a temperature too close to the race.”

Before finishing 12th in the Kentucky Derby, Alpha won the Count Fleet and the Withers and finished second in the Wood Memorial.

Alpha was broken in Aiken for Darley Stable by Tim Jones.
