Chemical fire prompts plant evacuation

An Augusta chemical plant was evacuated Sunday evening after a small chemical fire broke out, authorities said.

Around 7:45 p.m., firefighters responded to Finnchem USA Inc., a Kemira chemical plant at 2360 Doug Barnard Parkway, in reference to a chemical fire.

Firefighters at the scene said a spark had ignited a small chemical fire that had triggered the alarms for evacuation. Richmond County Sheriff’s deputies closed Doug Barnard Parkway both directions shortly after.

Firefighters put out the blaze and cleared the scene for employees to return to the plant around 8:30 p.m. No one was hurt.
