A passersby called police after seeing the body – later identified as Elliott Bernard Anthony – about 10:30 a.m. in the canal at 13th Street and Walton Way.

Richmond County sheriff’s Lt. Blaise Dresser said Anthony had been released the previous day from nearby University Hospital, where he was having his arm recasted after an injury.

Hospital officials told officers Anthony later returned to the hospital and appeared to be intoxicated.

It is unclear how Anthony drowned in the shallow water where he was found, authorities said. There is no evidence to suggest he hit his head or suffered any other injuries before the drowning, however, toxicology tests are pending, they said.

Homeless man drowns in Canal

Well I'm wondering why the headline had to read homeless man drowns in canal. To the general public the man who drowned my be labeled as homeless, but to me he was one of my closest childhood friend who wouldn't even hurt a fly. He was the boy that I played marbles with, the young man who had the first car in the neighborhood, the boy who played football and baseball with me and the friend that laughed and cried with me. Does his being homeless make it any easier for the people who love him to accept that he is no longer here with us?
