The Richmond County Coroner’s Office has identified Barbara Ann Godbee, 54, of Augusta, as the woman who died after a crash on Mike Padgett Highway on Tuesday morning.

Godbee died after the 2004 BMW she was a passenger in pulled in front of an oncoming vehicle, sheriff’s Capt. Scott Gay said.

Kiara Brown, 23, of Augusta, was driving south on Old Savannah Road around 8:30 a.m. when she tried to turn left in front of an oncoming Chevrolet Silverado driven by John Allen Gibson, 40, of Augusta, police said.

Godbee, a backseat, passenger, was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, where she was pronounced dead around 9 a.m. Brown was taken to MCG with nonlife threatening injuries.

Gibson and another passenger in the BMW were treated for minor injuries.

Authorities believe Brown was a medical employee who was transporting her client, Godbee, to a doctor’s appointment.

Charges are possible pending an investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

Brown was arrested in December 2008 on traffic charges. She was charged with following too closely, expired tag, violation of conditions of an instructional permit, and hit and run. For each offense, she was sentenced to 12 months’ probation, to run consecutively.

Tuesday’s accident was the second traffic fatality on Mike Padgett Highway in less than a week. Bonita Wallace, 57, of Grovetown, died Friday after she turned out in front of an oncoming pickup.

More and more...

This roadway begins to resemble a lion crouching in wait for unwary gazelle. Or even for the wary.

Stop blaming the road

It isn't the road, it is the drivers on the road.
Accidents happen daily (multiple times) on I-20 too, no one blames the interstate.
Drivers don't stop and look, they pull out in front of each other, they are busy doing other things. Yes, accidents are constant on Hwy 56, they are elsewhere too.
I'll be glad when they finally do widen it, put in more red lights, and turn lanes. Bet you a paycheck you're still going to hear about constant accidents.. I drove that road for years, road is fine, the drivers are not.

Drove down it this morning...there was a moron in the fast lane doing 40 with a line of traffic behind him...when I finally got to pass him (in the slow lane) he was looking down and texting on his phone. I ride a motorcycle and just about every close call I have had is either from a texter or some idiot with there dang phone to their ear and their mind not on the road.

yes...it's the drivers, not the road that is to blame. traffic has certainly increased over the years and it seems some drivers refuse to change their driving habits accordingly. driving a vehicle has become secondary to cell phones, drinks/food, and the host of other things that people do when they should be driving. it's a shame so many have to die for stupidity and selfishness.

What can I say. My prayers are with those involved in the tragedy.
It seems that in the end (in most cases) it's the careless driver that either pulls out, loses control...
Never is it that the road flies up and hits them.

Location

This Kellos Dr. is near Peach Orchard Rd. This section would be considered the non-speedway portion of Mike Padgett Hwy.

Worst drivers in the nation

This area has the worst drivers I have ever seen, they have complete disregard for the lanes painted on the road, there is a reason for the color and where they are painted, please learn what are these for.

So Sad

I live off Mike Padgett and I don't know when the DOT is going to give off their behinds and fix the many problems on this road. How many people have to die before they do something? Oh yeah...it is the state I am talking about!!!!!

pommom, the drivers on this

pommom,
the drivers on this road don't only drive on this road!!! They take other roads as well and yet you say its only the drivers not the road? How about turn lanes, lower the speed limits and add more traffic devices! Now that might help this situtation. I see people all day speeding past Deputies on this road and yet you never see anyone pulled over!! RCSD also needs to set up speed traps like they do on Bobby Jones! But you say its just the drivers!! Get real!!!!!
