According to the Georgia High School Association’s Web site, Warren County’s Screaming Devils and the Bulldogs will play Sept. 28 in Warrenton. The teams are Region 7-A members.

“We knew they would be on our schedule,” Warren County school Superintendent Carole Jean Carey said. “We’ve already decided, if we play them, it would have to be on a neutral field or on our field.”

Carey also wants a fan-free game if Warren County is to play Hancock Central, though she said players’ parents and school officials would be welcome to attend.

Carey didn’t want the player who hit Warren County head coach David Daniel to play.

She said that if all stipulations were not met, Warren County would forfeit the game.

The Hancock Central player who hit Daniel had his identity redacted from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s report.

In the report, the player said Daniel hit first. Daniel has denied that claim.

Hancock County school Superintendent Gwendolyn Jefferson Reeves said the Hancock Central player was a senior this past football season.

Reeves said she respects Carey’s stipulations, saying she would “of course” respect Carey’s wishes. Reeves hopes to sit with Carey during next season’s game, if it is played.

“I am elated,” Reeves said about the teams playing next season. “The students are fine. I want the adults to become fine with it. It’s history and it’s over. If you keep dwelling on a bad situation, how is it ever going to get better?”

Carey said she’s planning to have co-head coaches for Warren County this season.

Daniel would be one of the coaches; the other coach hasn’t been selected yet.

Rumor is that the Hancock Central player who hit the coach is being recruited by the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. Do you think they have any idea of what this kid was involved in?? I mean, I know any kid deserves a second chance, so I sure hope he turns things around for himself. As far as there being "no way" for another fight to break out when the 2 teams play...."no way"?? Are you kidding me? When you get high school kids together with stupid reasoning, there is ALWAYS a way for violence to erupt...even if there were a hundred cops there.

If he is being recruited by SC don't worry they will find out, but I doubt that will stop them.

Is far as the game goes I say let them play. Do you know how many fights have taken place over the years with teams like Butler/Hephzibah, Josey/Laney or Butler/Glen Hills. Some with gun fire exchanged. The point is as long as there are large groups of teens (insert a few thugs) in an area together fights are going to happen. You have to treat these events as you would a teen club. Lots of security!

Very sad situation to find yourself in- Dr. Carey forfeited the basketball games because of a safety issue & the GHSA did nothing. Who made the schedule? They should be held responsible for any further attacks on either side. As far as the comments from the Hancock Superintendent- how silly and unprofessional. Do you really think Dr. Carey would sit with you after the comments you made on the medIa? You all but referred Dr. Carey was all but short of hysterically insane. What parent in their right mind would allow their child to attend or partake in this game!

@Insider Information regarding his 5:16 p.m. post — the GBI report did not say whether the football helmet that caused the broken bone was swung or thrown. In my opinion, it would have to have been swung to cause that kind of damage.

Okay, you've got a high-school junior saying the Warren County coach hit him (the junior) first. The coach says no. Who do you believe? The GBI did not come to any conclusion. The Hancock County grand jury took the side of the junior.

You know, Georgia has a "stand your ground" law similar to Florida's. The football player who decked Coach Daniel set himself up to be in Zimmerman's position, i.e., he claims Coach Daniel threw the first punch. Therefore, the player is allowed to stand his ground and use force to protect himself. The grand jury must have believed the player and thus issued a correct decision not to indict.

As you can probably tell by my remarks I downplayed the whole thing. It's sad the coach was seriously hurt, but there appeared to be lots of blame on both sides. Both teams had lots of black players, too, so I can't see saying this was a racial thing worthy of civil rights battles in the 60's in Mississippi. I swear someone said that. There are statements the coach jumped in to the fight and had made contact with the player who hit him. I'm sure he was just protecting his players, but that still brings a cloud into the whole matter as LL is getting at.

It would be best to downplay the brawl, play the game with the crowd present, warn the players and fans their season will be cancelled if there is any incident and have ample security. That would be a very hard hitting game with a huge crowd that will give the visiting team lots of money.

In the article the Warren Co. school superintendent says she wants the game played without fans. She wants only school officials and parents of team members. The students will have to stand outside the stadium, apparently. There will be no large gate receipts.

Keeping the students outside the stadium is probably a good idea for this one game. Next year things can return to normal.

If they prohibit students

If they prohibit students from attending the game, do you think the students would want to mill around outside the stadium? There would be all sorts of opportunities for mischief. I would think that the schools would have city policemen, county sheriff's deputies, and maybe even state patrol officers there to insist the students "move on" and stay off school property.

That ought to be interesting—more interesting than the football game.
