The coroner was called out Sunday night to a traffic accident that closed both eastbound lanes of Gordon Highway between Gates 1 and 2, police say.

A Richmond County sheriff’s deputy said two sedans had hit head on. The driver of a black Honda Accord died at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle, a silver-colored Acura, was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital. A third car was also involved, but its passengers appeared unhurt.

In a news release, Deputy Coroner Kenneth Boose identified the deceased as Peter C. Barile, 65, of Louisville, Georgia. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:45 p.m.

The Serious Traffic Accident Response team was also called in.
