A Barnwell, S.C., police officer was critically injured after being hit on South Carolina Highway 3 early Saturday morning.

Around 1:30 a.m., the officer, whose name has not been released, was patrolling the area when he saw a juvenile walking down the wrong side of the highway. The officer pulled his car into the southbound lane and got out to talk to the youth, South Carolina State Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Brent Kelly said.

While he was talking to the juvenile, Sarah Wallace, 84, crashed into the police car while driving south.

The police cruiser then hit the officer and the juvenile, whose name has not been released.

The officer was airlifted to a hospital and the juvenile was taken by ambulance, Kelly said.

Their conditions have not been released, but the Barnwell Police department’s Facebook page said the officer was “critically injured.”

Wallace and her three passengers were taken to the Barnwell hospital with minor injuries, Kelly said.
