District 1 Augusta Commissioner Matt Aitken plans to run for re-election, his campaign manager Brooke Buxton confirmed Tuesday.

“He decided he could make the commitment. He and his wife prayed about it for some time,” Buxton said.

A formal announcement is planned at 5 p.m. Wednesday at The Legacy at Walton Oaks, 401 Fairhope St., off Sand Bar Ferry Road.

In recent months, Aitken said he was uncertain if he would seek re-election. Buxton said he made his final decision in the past week.

“He thinks District 1 needs his leadership. He’s going to keep making positive changes for Augusta,” Buxton said.

Aitken will join Harrisburg community activist Lori Davis and former Laney Walker Neighborhood Association president Stanley Hawes in the race.

Aitken previously said he was reconsidering a second term because of unwarranted public criticism of his actions by local media.

Advantage to Hawes, although I hope Davis can somehow pull it off.

Riverman. Have you ever heard of Hawes? I doubt many people in Laney Walker have heard of him. And he didnt even know he had to file a campaign disclosure form. That shows a campaign that is unprepared and in disarray. Plus you assume that everyone will vote along racial lines. I dont think that will be the case this time. There are much bigger issues at hand that trump racial politics. I have to say that Aitken is more clueless than I first thought. His record as a commissioner is horrible. Can anyone think of any one issue he has championed? All I can remember about him is that awkward news interview where he was clueless about what was in the budget he had just voted to approve moments before. That was painful to watch. I think Davis is clearly in the driver's seat in this race.

Must have upped Aitken's

Must have upped Aitken's anti. There was NO WAY that group was going to allow Lori to run unopposed. Lori is their nightmare; she's for the taxpayers.

Interesting. River, I'd

Interesting. River, I'd disagree with advantage Hawes. It's my understanding that Mr. Hawes wasn't even aware that you had to file documents with the state and still has not done so.
I also believe that Mr. Aitken has shown very little leadership in District 1, other than voting in favor of the interests of the "good ole boys".Just look at the video of Mr. Aitken being sideswiped by Chris Thomas at channel 12 when he voted on a budget he never read.
Lori Davis may be a lightning rod but at least, to me, it seems she does her homework. And wouldn't vote on anything she didn't understand.....

Willow.. The Cabal's puppet has been exposed. The taxpayers need an advocate on the commission. That would be Lori.

Lori fully supports public

Lori fully supports public safety needs over frivolous spending and since that is the primary function of any local government, I believe she could do a good job.

Lori knows I support her, but

Lori knows I support her, but the cabal is behind Aitken with that machine they have that's more dangerous than Iranian nuclear weapons. They should both be taken out. Where in the world did they find Aitken?

As far as Hawes, voters do vote along racial lines in most cases. It was an aberration when Aitken won...and Mayor Copenhaver-Boardman.

Aitken needs an image

Aitken needs an image consultant. Who gave him the bright idea of announcing his intentions in a glorified housing project.

Double Standard. The housing

Double Standard. The housing projects in Augusta DON'T look similar to Walton Oaks.. They shouldn't anyway, because Walton Oaks is mixed-income and not a housing project.. The first phase of the development is 55 & up, and it won't have the same crime problems either..

He's obviously trying to show District 1 is changing under his leadership... The $30 million Walton Oaks is a huge upgrade compared to Underwood...

I think it might come down to who has the better vision for Harrisburg, Laney Walker, and East Augusta(specifically Eastbound).. The CBD and Olde Town are kind of separated from the other's...

I would love for the Riverwalk to be extended into East Augusta...

Brooke Buxton is the person

Brooke Buxton is the person who took over the Market on the River from the DDA...

The Market now is paid for by sponsors, and can help the 8th street plaza become a little French Quater...

Drive on Druid Park and Lane

Drive on Druid Park and Lane Walker by Paine College. Drive on Broad Street near Lake Olmstead, those roads are terrible. Crime is terrible in that area. He hasn't done any more than the Beard's in that district. Look for William Fennoy to jump in that race as well, Hawes may bow out because he hasn't raised any money.

Are you that blind? Of course there will be crime...you will be putting people with a little money and material things into a area of people that prey on those that have more than them....the sad thing is the decent people that live among the liars, cheats and lowlifes get tarnished reputations by the bad.

Just saw where Marion
Unpublished

Just saw where Marion Williams is running for commissioner again. If the voters of ARC elect him they are morons. Remember this is the guy that wanted to give your tax dollars to someone filing a lawsuit against the county. Please tell me you are smart enough not to vote for this clown.
