The United Egg Producers, based in Alpharetta, Ga., announced the donation to food banks linked with Feeding America. It’s the fifth year of spring contributions, which would have a retail value of around $1 million.
Many farmers donate eggs throughout the year when they have a surplus, Egg Producers spokesman Mitch Head said Thursday.
While the farmers won’t be dying the eggs or wearing fur suits and floppy ears when they make their deliveries, they will coordinate with the regional food banks on schedules to accommodate those with little or no refrigeration.
“We try to make it as seamless and easy as we can,” Head said.
From a nutrition point of view, eggs are full of protein and 13 essential nutrients like folate, iron and zinc. That makes them potent foods for families struggling in a weak economy, especially ones that may rely on less-nutritious packaged foods to save money.
“It’s no longer just unemployed people who seek out help from their local food banks,” said Vicki Escarra, president and CEO of Feeding America. “More than ever, we’re working with people who just can’t make ends meet and need help feeding themselves and their families.”
Each year, Feeding America’s 200 food banks supply 37 million people through networks of 61,000 local food pantries, soup kitchens and other agencies.
