Payne: Augusta National doesn't discuss membership issues

Masters Tournament and Augusta National Golf Club Chairman Billy Payne declined to answer questions about female members joining the all-male club at his annual news conference Wednesday.

“That’s a membership issue,” he said to one of the questions. “We don’t talk about private deliberations.”

Reports surfaced last week about IBM CEO Virginia Rometty possibly joining the club. Payne said it’s club policy not to discuss specifically named candidates for membership.

Payne discussed Augusta National’s efforts in growing the game through the Masters Junior Pass Program and the allowance of the Masters video game, which is now in its second year. Payne said the club is doing everything it can to reverse a slide in golf participation.

“Golf is too precious to sit on the sidelines,” he said, “and watch decreasing participation.”

With an overnight storm dropping 1.4 inches of rain, Payne talked about this week’s tournament and the possible challenge bad weather will present Thursday. He said Masters officials are unsure whether they will enact a lift, clean and place policy.

“We surely will not want to have to do that,” he said. “That’s a decision we will have to make.”

Reporter asked, he answered.

Reporter asked, he answered. Now, let's start the golf tournament. Membership issues are not any business of the reporter, and most certainly not any business of golf fans. We simply want to see the world's best golfers compete on the grounds of ANGC.

Virginia Romety is an attractive woman and would make a fine addition to the Augusta National. But...
Does the fact that she is a CEO for a sponsor have any bearing on membership? Does all sponsors become members?
If not then, the matter should be clear. They can include her or not. Their decision.

What ticks me off is Payne

What ticks me off is Payne criticized Tiger about his marital fidelity, yet, Watson was given a pass and honored last night by the Mayor.

Let the Augusta National run

Let the Augusta National run their club like they want too. It is private you know and has every right to be. The reporter has no business trying to pry information out of Mr. Payne. Why doesn't he ask why the Junior League or Colonial Dames does not have male members. All are private organizations and membership is up to them. Private means private.

Mr. Payne, the Augusta

Mr. Payne, the Augusta National's Chairman, has proven that he is willing to change even some of the club's long-time traditions. He asked some of the former champions not to play after they had gotten too old to be competitive, and he is the person who changed the rule that winning a PGA tour event automatically gets a player invited to play the Masters. And there is no doubt that Virginia Rometty would be a very well qualified candidate for membership.
But Martha Burk sure needs to keep her mouth shut about it. She has made it appear that…if the Augusta National does invite Ms. Rometty to join…then she (Burk) will claim that she somehow “won the battle”. And that’s absolutely the worst thing that could have been done. No organization wants to be seen as having been FORCED to do something, whether it’s true or not. I wonder whether Ms. Burk really wants to see a female member, or if she’s more interested in having the cause.

And just to set the record straight: A large number of the groups that made up the National Council of Women’s Organizations…that Ms. Burk was Chairwoman of a few years ago when she led her protest…do not allow men to join. I guess some discriminatory practices are a little “more equal” than others. And that “righteous indignation” sure goes in only one direction sometimes.

Has Rometty applied for membership? Does anyone know?
Is this just another attempt by the MSM to make Augusta look bad (and we, as good little followers, take the bait)?

allhans, in answer to your

allhans, in answer to your question: it is in fact the tradition that the CEOs of the three sponsor corporations of the Masters are made honorary members of Augusta National. Rometty's male predecessors at the helm of IBM were all granted membership when IBM was one of the sponsors. That's the specific reason why this issue is of special interest this year.

You don't apply for

You don't apply for membership to the Augusta National. You are sponsored by another member and then voted on. There is a chance that Ms. Rometty does not want to be a member. I wouldn't think it would be much fun, especially, if she doesn't play.

JTF, I would think she would

JTF, I would think she would feel very awkward there as a lone token woman; especially since she is not a golfer.
However, as long as the PC police keep stirring the pot, the ANGC will thumb their noses at them.

Burn: it is a current issue that a reporter can ask a valid question about; but once BP said he would not comment on it, that should have been the end of instead of the questions getting re-asked numerous times with different angles. That is just disrespectful. I hope they ban those jerks from future press conferences.

After Obama and Romney both

After Obama and Romney both take their foot out of their mouths on this, they need to answer why it is that no non-blacks are able to gain admittance to the Congressional Black Caucus? Their preference is that all members are BLACK...so, by definition, their exclusionary choice makes them a club...a club that is, btw, supported by public funds. The Augusta National is a PRIVATE club, does not accept public funds for donations, and can limit their membership however they choose. I personally think that one day they will invite a female member, but it's in their own time and situation. Who knows? They may have already invited a female in the past.
