A CSX train made an emergency stop Monday night after the train personnel feared a woman walking close to the tracks might have been struck, authorities said.

The train has been blocking Barton Chapel Road near Gordon Highway since at least 9:30 p.m., and was expected to remain there at least until 11:30 p.m.

Richmond County sheriff’s Cpl. R.A. Schaffer said a CSX engineer saw a woman walking close to the tracks near Bobby Jones Expressway and stopped the train because it wasn’t clear whether the woman had been hit.

Deputies and Augusta-Richmond County firefighters searched both sides of the tracks between Barton Chapel Road and Bobby Jones Expressway and didn’t find any evidence that someone had been hit, Schaffer said.

However, CSX supervisors were en route to the scene to pull the train’s video to verify that no one was hit, Schaffer said.
