Columbia County school bus crashes into trash bin

Several pupils suffered minor injuries when a Columbia County school bus crashed into a trash bin Monday morning in Grovetown.

Of the 38 pupils on board, eight were taken by ambulance to a hospital and five others were transported by their parents, Sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris said. All injuries were minor.

School bus driver Ernest Turner, 58, was driving bus No. 991 about 7:15 a.m. when the bus hit the bin in the 100 block of Misty Woods Drive, Morris said. Turner was driving forward when he misjudged the distance and struck the bin, which sat less than 2 feet off the road.

School system Transportation Director Dewayne Porter was out of town Monday. Assistant Director Shirley Doolittle refused to immediately comment on the crash.
