Ga. woman freed after fall into trash chute

DUNWOODY, Ga. — A woman was rescued from a trash chute after she became stuck between the first and second floors of her suburban Atlanta apartment complex.

Crews were called to the Gables Metropolitan Apartments in Dunwoody shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday, when the woman became trapped inside the garbage compacting device while trying to retrieve her cell phone.

The 19-year-old woman told Fox 5 Atlanta that she was wearing flip flops, which caused her to slip when she reached for her phone in the trash unit. She ended up falling a half story before hitting trash lodged in the unit.

Police tell CBS Atlanta that the trash lodged inside saved the woman from a long fall and serious injury.

Officials said they had to remove the entire trash compactor to free her.
