Ex-wife of Augusta attorney surrenders to authorities

Caroline Neal

The ex-wife of an Augusta attorney surrendered to Richmond County authorities early this morning to be booked on rape charges, sheriff’s officials said.

Caroline Caldwell Neal, 23, is in a holding cell at the Richmond County Jail awaiting an afternoon bond hearing before a Superior Court judge, said her attorney Pete Theodocion.

Theodocion said Neal turned herself in to investigators at about 4:30 a.m. today, after returning from Greenville, S.C., where she lives since her divorce from Joseph Neal Jr.

The Neals were indicted Tuesday on charges of rape and providing alcohol to a person under 21 in connection with a Dec. 16 incident at their Kings Way home.

Authorities allege the Neals had “carnal knowledge” of an 18-year-old woman against her will after plying her with alcohol and marijuana.

Joseph Neal Jr. was arrested Tuesday and has been in custody since that time awaiting a bond hearing.

Theodocion said he will ask the judge to set a reasonable bond for his client because she should not be considered a threat to the community, but he doesn’t plan to present a defense to the charges.

“We will not attempt to try the case today in a bond hearing,” he said.
