A 24-year-old Augusta man died after the motorcycle he was driving collided with another vehicle at Gordon Highway and North Leg Road on Thursday evening.

Moises Santiago-Rodriguez was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:09 p.m., Richmond County Deputy Coroner Kenneth Boose said..

At 5:36 p.m., the driver’s silver 2003 Suzuki motorcycle, which was traveling north on North Leg Road, and a green 1999 Ford Expedition collided. The Expedition, driven by Toni Akiei, 34, of Augusta, made a turn to travel east on Gordon Highway from the southbound North Leg Road left-turn lane.

The accident is still under investigation but charges are pending, Richmond County sheriff’s Capt. Scott Gay said.

Witnesses at the scene told police conflicting stories about whether or not the female driver had a turn arrow, sheriff’s Lt. Randy Prickett said. The motorcycle and driver were thrown about 100 feet.

Help me out here.

How does a motorcycle travel northbound on a highway, and a car, that was going to turn onto the same highway, was eastbound? On the same road?

And Gordon Highway has a northbound direction? You mean it doesn't run east and west like it used to?

When will drivers realize

When will drivers realize that a motorcycle can't slow or stop like an automobile can. When you pull in front of one you are doing it at the cyclists peril.

(I understand that North Leg crosses Gordon Highway and that two vehicles traveling in opposite directions are just that.)

The article was changed, always remember to look for the little red update time up there. Then the previous posters comments won't appear so confusing. Corgi was completely right, but it has since been fixed. =)

Once again, a car fails to

Once again, a car fails to yield right of way, and a motorcyclist pays the price. Now law enforcement will want to impose unreasonable checkpoints on motorcyclists to make sure they are being safe, like the B.E.A.S.T. checkpoints being planned on March 9th along I-95 and I-75. When will motorists start paying attention and notice motorcyclists? Condolences to the motorcyclist's family and friends.

I knew Moises from school. I can't believe he's dead! He's barely even lived! He was one of the sweetest, happiest people I'd ever met. My condolences to his family... I know he was and still is loved!
