Augusta ties a Leap Day record high

The temperature at Augusta Regional Airport reached 79 degrees Wednesday, tying the record from 1976.

The record for Feb. 29 is easier to beat than the rest of the month, since there are one-fourth as many occurrences because of leap year.

Tony Petrolito, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said record temperatures for the rest of February are in the low to mid-80s.

“It’s a leap year thing, I guess,” he said.
