Hand cut off in insurance fraud

  • Follow Latest News

COLUMBIA— A Cayce man has been charged with insurance fraud after another man’s hand was chopped off.

Thirty-four-year-old Gerald B. Hardin faces six charges, including mail fraud for a 2008 incident in Sumter County where a man’s hand was cut off with a pole saw.

Federal indictments state that Hardin and another person used a saw to intentionally cut off the hand of a third person in an insurance fraud scheme. The indictment says the men submitted claims under a homeowner’s insurance policy and three accidental death and dismemberment polices.

It says the men received more than $670,000.

Hardin faces up to 20 years in prison and $250,000 in fines if he is convicted.

I wonder how much the guy

I wonder how much the guy that had his hand cut off received in insurance money? No amount of money would get me to cut of my hand. These clowns should receive the maximum penalty allowable by law, if convicted.

bj, you just seem to come up with the right stuff to say about something as stupid as this. You deserve applause and we know at least one guy who can't participate. Might use his one hand to scratch his head and try to figure out how he got involved! Money!?!?

Gotta hand it to them, they had large ones to try such an underhanded scheme as this! Guess they had a hard time handling the pressure of government hand outs.

Nothin2show4it@ 11:07am

Nothin2show4it@ 11:07am posted-$670,000.00 for a hand? I'm not greedy, I wonder how much for a pinky finger?

That took me back to the year of 1980 or 81 while working at Kendalls that used to be on Marvin Griffin RD...
We had a very bad accident on one of the machines that would grind the plastic waste ,while trying to free a jam a workers hand got caught, then pulled under the blades up to the elbow- before they were freed.
A few months later ,while working on a different machine another worker started talking about how much money you get for fingers, hands and so on...Next thing we know she is thrown out of her seat, minus two fingers...I think she got about $500 per finger..
