The temperature hit 82 degrees at Augusta Regional Airport at 4:06 p.m., 1 degree higher than the 1909 record, said Jim Kilmer, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in West Columbia, S.C.

Thursday’s high was 18 degrees above the normal temperature, but a cold front moving into the area this afternoon will cool things off slightly for the weekend.

Forecasts call for a high around 70 degrees with partly cloudy skies today. Temperatures will continue to dip lower, with Saturday’s high in the lower 60s and Sunday in the upper 50s, Kilmer said.

Warmer-than-normal temperatures were measured for much of winter and should continue into spring. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, last month was the fourth warmest January on record in the United States and the warmest since 2006.
