Man found dead after morning fire

A 40-year-old Augusta man died this morning in a house fire on Wrightsboro Road.

Firefighters were called to the 3700 block of Wrightsboro Road around 12:45 a.m. where they found the residence in flames.

Jimmy Edward Smith was discovered inside. He was pronounced dead at 1:29 a.m., according to Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Bowen.

Smith is being transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Augusta for an autopsy.
