An Aiken organization that helps protect, relocate and care for abused or neglected children got some assistance this winter from Savannah River Remediation workers from Savannah River Site’s Closure & Waste Disposal Authority.
The workers participated in the Helping Hands Inc. adopt-a-room project and designed and furnished a room at the group’s shelter to help a young girl who was not able to live at home.
The group went shopping for bed linens, blankets, curtains and space rugs. They also purchased accessories a teenage girl would enjoy, such as a fabric-covered memo board, bed lamp and storage bin organizer. Bathroom accessories included curtain, toilet seat cover and wall appliques.
The group cleaned floors and primed and painted walls, trim and doors and refurbished two dressers. The final touch was a set of wall murals painted by an employee’s spouse, an established Aiken County artist.
“The room has been the talk all around Helping Hands,” said DeShawn Lattimore, the group’s community outreach and volunteer coordinator. “This room will brighten up any child’s day.”
Helping Hands, a United Way agency, cares for young male and female victims up to 21 years old.
