More than 10,000 gallons of sewage overflowed from a south Augusta manhole Wednesday, according to the Augusta Utilities Department.

Utilities was notified of the overflow, in the woods behind a home in the 2000 block of Ewart Court, off Tobacco Road, at 10:15 a.m. and corrected it by 4:40 p.m.

The sewer line backed up because it was full of rags, Utilities said.

A Butler Creek tributary was affected. The spill is considered major.

People need to be careful what they flush down the toilet or pour down the drain. Some of those institutional-sized janitorial sinks have large discharge lines.

Cooking grease, feminine

Cooking grease, feminine products, and paper towels are just a few of the things that are commonly flushed that do not break down. They cause big problems in the sewers. Trash receptacles and cooking oil recycling are the best options for those things.
