Atlanta Senior Police Officer Gail D. Thomas died on duty

Police say 22-year-old Chasity Nicole Jones was charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle, drunken driving and reckless driving after Senior Police Officer Gail D. Thomas was struck and killed by a car late Tuesday night.

Authorities say Thomas was struck while helping another officer who was investigating an earlier wreck on an interstate ramp, authorities said.

Jail records show that Jones was being held on $1,100 bond. The records do not indicate whether she has an attorney in the case.

Funeral arrangements for the fallen officer are pending.

The bond apparently isn't a typo. You can see her inmate record here: http://inmates.fultonsheriff.net/PublicBookings_view.asp?editid1=1203348

But that bond is only for the DUI and a Failure to Yield charge (there is no reckless driving charge, according to Fulton County). No bond is shown for the Homicide by Vehicle. Her first court hearing is today at 11AM. How someone has any sort of bond when charged with homicide of any kind is beyond me...

Augusta Chronicle, please, please, PLEASE stop referring to Law Enforcement Officers as "cops". It is a derogatory title. They are either "Law Enforcement Officers" or "Police Officers".

I don't feel that the word "cop" is derogatory, but I do feel those that use it, especially those in the media, to be very unprofessional.

Condolences to the Thomas family. Chick was twice the legal limit and had a horrible driving record and refused to show up for court to answer to some of them. No sympathy here, no young and dumb excuse...... just plain dumb and selfish!!!!
