Savannah cop car collision kills cyclist

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- A bicyclist is dead following a collision with a Savannah-Chatham police forensics vehicle Sunday night.

“A metro police van struck a bicyclist on Highway 17,” said Garden City police Sgt. Tim McMillan. “It was a tragic fatality. The individual was killed.” Garden City police traffic enforcement will be handling the investigation, McMillan said. Late Sunday night Savannah-Chatham police spokesman Julian Miller said the accident occured at 8:30 p.m., just north of Dean Forest Road on U.S. 17.

The names of the two police officers in the vehicle nor the identity of the stricken cyclist are being released yet as the investigation is just beginning. McMillan said the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
