Columbia police say 4 dead in wreck

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Columbia police say four people died in a fiery early morning wreck near Williams-Brice Stadium.

Police Chief Randy Scott said all four people in the vehicle were killed when it ran off George Rogers Boulevard around 5 a.m. Wednesday and crashed into a building and exploded in flames.

Police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said investigators are working with the Richland County coroner’s office to identify the victims. She said the bodies were burned beyond recognition and there is no immediate word on the age or sex of those killed.

The coroner’s office did not immediately respond to messages Wednesday.

Roads in the area were closed for emergency workers at the scene.

Investigators were trying to determine why the driver lost control of the vehicle.
