North Augusta cop hurt in fight with shoplift suspect

NORTH AUGUSTA -- A Public Safety officer was sent to the hospital this morning after a fight with a shoplifting suspect at Wal-Mart.

North Augusta Public Safety officers were sent to the store on Knox Avenue around 1 a.m. to investigate a complaint about Aaron Looper, 20, of Conifer Court, concealing merchandise, according to police accounts.

Looper dropped two bottles of wine on the floor and struggled with the two officers when they tried to arrest him; one officer was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, where he was treated and released, according to a report.

Looper fled the store, but was caught near a retention pond between Shoppes of North Augusta and Chik-Fil-A, a report states. After another struggle, he was arrested on charges of shoplifting, resisting arrest, public drunkenness, disobeying a lawful order and simple assault.
