Richmond County Board of Education Public Safety Lt. Richard Roundtree confirmed Tuesday that he will run for sheriff this year, as long as current Sheriff Ronnie Strength bows out as many expect.

Roundtree, a former sheriff’s investigator, said he met with Strength on Monday to discuss his intentions and to see where the sheriff stood.

“I will not run against Ronnie Strength,” Roundtree said. “I look forward to be competing for an open seat.”

Strength said Tuesday he will make an official announcement about his intentions in mid-February. Until then he said he expects to continue to hear from his constituents, many of whom are asking him to stay on another term.

“There’s a lot of pressure,” he said.

Roundtree said his eight years as a homicide investigator as well as his more recent experience with the Board of Education will help him, should he be elected.

“I’ve seen the direct connection between a lack of education and the violent crime rate,” Roundtree said.

Roundtree would make a great sheriff. He is very effective on the job. He may have made some mistakes, which lot of us do. Look at Governor Deal, he was elected
with all his baggage.

Strength has health problems.

Strength has health problems. Possibly that's why he's been ineffective in many ways.

Willie7, although I don't think Roundtree is the right person, I believe a black candidate could win the election and be an effective sheriff by being able to better work with the people.

The strong link between Roundtree and Strength has always been strangely interesting to me.

Sheriff Strength is to be

Sheriff Strength is to be commended for an excellent job as Sheriff. Under his leadership and with guidance and direction from leaders within the Sheriff's Office, they have conducted some major operations and improved upon what Sheriff Webster did to make the department better. Even under pressure from slashed budgets and reduced manpower from the commission, he has done exceedingly well.

Although I am sure many friends, supporters and others would like to see Sheriff Strength remain; he has more than paid his time in giving back to this community and has earned the right to an enjoyable fulfilling retirement.

A changing of the guard with a progressive leader who will take the department to the next level will not only continue with Sheriff’s Strength’s legacy but will ensure the department is ready for future needs.

In reading the Article from the Metro Spirit a few weeks back, it was clear that Sheriff Strength, if he decides not to run, fully supports Scott Peebles. Peebles is far more qualified than any others discussing a potential run and there is absolutely no comparison between him and Roundtree. Peebles has learned well from the Sheriff but at the same time has excellent ideas to take the Sheriff’s Office to the next level and is an excellent leader. I am sure that he would not even consider a run unless the Sheriff were to announce his intentions not to run but if this turns out to be the case, Captain Peebles is certainly the best candidate for the position of Sheriff.

Looking only at the word "if"

Looking only at the word "if" lets all of Augusta know that Ronnie is not the person for us. He has his on personal agenda. We support and build this community and if Ronnie can not gut another chanllege why should we support him.

What Roundtree is doing is

What Roundtree is doing is double-dog daring Strength. It's a brilliant strategy for Roundtree. If strength takes the dare and runs, Rountree is set up four years from now to come in in a cakewalk. If Strength retires, Roundtree looks like a juggernaut and wins this year. Strength's retiring would look like an endorsement for Roundtree.

Strength forgave every

Strength forgave every indiscretion Roundtree was involved with. Leaving a gun and confidential police records in his apartment when he moved. The "Grateful Mother" comments right here. Signing the hooker out of jail on Sunday afternoons for private "interviews."

Strength let him slide on all those occasions and helped him get his current job with the BOE. Roundtree knows stuff.

No fan of Roundtree, but

No fan of Roundtree, but Strength acts like a politician not a law enforcement officer. Richmond co needs a Sheriff not another politician. Roundtree may not be the man for the job but neither is Ronnie Strength. For this county to move forward he MUST be replaced.....

Ronnie Strength may be a nice

Ronnie Strength may be a nice guy but he's old school Southside Mafia.. pretty much the only guy they still have in office now. I'm not saying that Roundtree is a good replacement.. I'm hoping someone else will emerge. But its long past time to sweep the southside mafia into the political dustbin of history.

Ronnie is tired. He has been sheriff for so long. He was sheriff
when Webster was in the office. Webster was a joke and if he hadn't had Strength, he would have been in bad shape.
