Missing cat mystery on Tybee Island

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. -- Police are investigating the mysterious disappearance of cats on Tybee Island, including five that were found dead.

WTOC-TV reports at least 20 cats have disappeared since early December.

John Womble and Claire Owen are among residents of the Savannah Beach and Racquet Club community who believe the cats are being poisoned.

Womble found some of the bodies around the property. He said he spotted a powder near the dead cats. The bodies and the powder are being tested.

WTOC reports that the Humane Society and Georgia Department of Natural Resources are also looking into the case.

Residents say the cats are among several strays living in the neighborhood. Residents say they are spayed and neutered by volunteers with the nonprofit Milton Project of Savannah.
