New Year's crackdown leads to traffic arrests

At least nine impaired drivers were arrested Friday night through a combined effort by Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia State Patrol and the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

Richmond Sheriff’s Capt. Scott Gay said two checkpoints, and other stops, yielded nine DUI arrests, 12 seat-belt violation tickets, 14 drivers with a suspended license, five without insurance and 30 other citations including missing a tag or headlight violations.

Richmond County added 40 extra deputies to the streets for the first of a two-night initiative during the New Year’s holiday to “reduce the number of impaired drivers,” Gay said.
