ALLENTOWN, Ga. — The Georgia Department of Corrections says several inmates have been injured in an accident involving a prisoner transport bus on Interstate 16.

Officials say the bus overturned in Twiggs County, southeast of Macon, on Thursday morning.

Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright says a passenger car cut in front of the bus, causing the driver to take evasive action. Wright says the bus rolled over on its side.

The Department of Corrections says 11 inmates were on the bus that had left the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson and was headed to Coastal State Prison in Garden City near Savannah.

They say two staff members were on board the bus, and that no other vehicles were involved.

Officials say none of the injuries are life-threatening.
