I-20 overpass is open but could close for damage inspection

The underside of an Interstate 20 overpass at Belair Road is open today, but periodic closures are possible as officials with the Georgia Department of Transportation inspect the damage caused Wednesday by a dump truck.

The bed of a dump truck traveling westbound on the interstate failed to properly lower, causing it to strike the steel girders of the overpass around 3 p.m.

A small gas pipeline under the bridge survived the impact, but the full extent of the damage to the bridge remains unknown.

“I expect it will be significant,” Pam Tucker, the director of the Columbia County Emergency & Operations Division, said this morning.
