CHARLESTON, S.C. — Fire officials in Charleston are trying to determine what started a fire where a man’s body was found.
The body of 49-year-old Robert Nelson of Charleston was found in the burned remains of the home early Monday.
Charleston County Deputy Coroner Dottie Lindsey said an autopsy was planned Tuesday. Lindsey said Nelson did not live in the home.
Fire spokesman Mark Ruppel says the home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived shortly after 5 a.m. It took firefighters about 20 minutes to extinguish the blaze.
Ruppel says the cause of the fire is under investigation. But he says it does not appear to be similar to more than 80 suspected arson fires in the downtown area in the past 10 years.
