Columbia County school officials announced this morning that Stevens Creek Elementary School has been named a Georgia School of Excellence.

The Martinez school is one of just 26 in the state to receive the School of Excellence title this year.

To qualify, schools must place in the top 10 percent of highest performing schools on assessments in reading or math, or have attained the greatest continuous gains in student achievement for the past three years, according to a school system press release.

Stevens Creek Elementary was chosen for being among the top 10 percent of highest performing schools. For obtaining the designation, it will receive a $1,000 check from Georgia Natural Gas.
